What to Do With Amazon FBA Returns and Unsellable Stock
Customer returns, stranded inventory, seasonal overstock — FBA sellers accumulate dead stock fast. Here's how to liquidate it quickly and recover some value.
Why FBA Returns Accumulate
Amazon's customer-friendly return policy means sellers absorb a lot of returned inventory. Some of it is resellable — but a lot isn't, especially if it's been opened, repackaged by Amazon, or flagged as "unsellable" without obvious reason. On top of returns, there are:
- Stranded inventory:Listings were suppressed and the stock is now sitting unsold at the fulfilment centre, accruing monthly storage fees.
- Seasonal overstock:Christmas stock, summer items, or trend products that missed their window and won't sell at full price again.
- Removal orders:Stock you've pulled back from FBA that Amazon's warehouses couldn't sell — now physically in your hands and no longer sellable on Amazon.
Your Options
Amazon's Own Liquidation Programme
Amazon now offers a liquidation service where unsellable inventory is sold in bulk to wholesale buyers. You get a small percentage of the estimated recovery value — typically 5–10% of cost. No effort required but payout is very low. Best for stock you can't be bothered recovering yourself.
Bulk Buyers (like StockLeads)
For categories we buy — clothing, accessories, beauty, toys, games, books — submitting to a UK bulk buyer after a removal order often gets you a better return than Amazon's liquidation. Submit online, get an offer in 48 hours, post with a free Evri label. Best for 10–500 items.
eBay
If the returned items are still in good condition, relisting on eBay (as seller-fulfilled, not FBA) can recover significant value. More effort but higher return. Good for branded products, collectibles, and anything with strong eBay demand.
Let Amazon Destroy
For items with no recovery value — damaged packaging, broken products, items below a sensible threshold — Amazon's disposal service removes them from the warehouse for a per-unit fee. Avoids ongoing storage fees. Not recommended for anything with residual value.
Comparison
| Method | Speed | Payout | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bulk Buyer (StockLeads) | 48h offer, 1–2 days pay | Better than Amazon liquidation | Low |
| Amazon Liquidation | Weeks | 5–10% of cost | Very low |
| eBay | Days to weeks per item | Highest | High |
| Amazon Disposal | Immediate | £0 (costs money) | Very low |
Tips for FBA Sellers
Request removal orders before long-term storage fees kick in
Amazon charges significantly higher monthly fees after 365 days. Set calendar reminders to check slow-moving inventory quarterly.
Bundle by category before submitting to a bulk buyer
A lot of 40 clothing items is easier to assess and value than a mixed lot of 10 clothing + 10 toys + 10 accessories. Separate and submit as distinct lots for faster, more accurate offers.
Don't pay storage fees on dead stock
Every month you keep unsellable inventory at an FBA warehouse is costing you money. The recovery value of most dead stock goes down over time too — act sooner rather than later.
